About "Merciful Release"

« Temple of Love » par les Sisters of Mercy, pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre n°29 consacré, comme annoncé la semaine dernière par les Sisterhood, au label Merciful Release, label dirigé par Andrew Eldricht, leader charismatique et sans doute autocratique des Sisters et créé dans le but avoué (dans un premier temps tout au moins...) de s’entendre à la radio.  La première sortie du label fut donc  « The damage done », 45t des Sisters édité à une centaine d’exemplaires et, vous l’imaginez bien, très recherché aujourd’hui par les collectionneurs.

Motivé peut-être par ce sentiment selon lequel « Il y a un sacré paquet de formations atroces  en Angleterre, surtout à Londres», pour reprendre l’une de ses déclarations de 83, Eldricht  signa aussi quelques groupes sur son label. Le premier d’entre eux  fut The March Violets, groupe également originaire de Leeds et qui, comme les Sisters, utilisait une boîte à rythmes.

La programmation de l'émission tentera de tenir compte de cette "diversité"...

"Temple of Love" by the Sisters of Mercy to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter No. 29 devoted, as announced last week by the Sisterhood, to the label Merciful Release, label run by Andrew Eldricht, charismatic and autocratic leader of the Sisters and created with the object (initially at least ...) of being  heard on the radio. The label's first release was therefore "The damage done," 45t by The Sisters just produced to a hundred copies, and you can well imagine how much it is sought by collectors today.

Maybe motivated by the feeling that "There are a whole lot of terrible bands in England, especially in London," (according to one of his interviews from 83)  Eldricht also signed a few groups on his label. The first of these was The March Violets, also  a band from Leeds who, like the Sisters, used a drum machine.

The programming of the show will attempt to account to this "diversity" ...

A first New Wave show (I thought...)

"Away", par The Bolshoi, pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre n°28 consacré, comme annoncé la semaine dernière par The Essence, à la New Wave. Pas de thématique particulière aujourd’hui, juste l’envie de partager certains titres construits en rupture avec le son postpunk auquel l’émission vous a sans doute davantage habitués.

Peu de blahblah ce soir, donc, si ce n’est une précision, à savoir que mon propos ne consistera nullement à considérer la New wave comme une bannière artificielle sous laquelle ou pourrait placer l’ensemble des artistes ayant émergé après le déferlement punk. Et même si je n’apprécie que modérément recourir aux classifications, le mouvement New Wave obéit à mon avis à des caractéristiques à la fois assez précises et assez floues pour permettre l’émergence au sein de ce genre d’artistes et de groupes originaux. La preuve par l’exemple avec la programmation de ce soir.

"Away" by The Bolshoi to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter No. 28 devoted, as announced last week by The Essence, the New Wave music. Then, no particular theme today, I just wanted to share songs breaking with the ​​postpunk's sound you're used    to with this show.

So, no blahblah tonight, but I want nevertheless to say that my intention is not to consider the New Wave as an artificial banner under which one could place all the artists who emerged after the punk's wave of enthousiasm/violence (depends...) . I don't very much appreciate  the use of classifications. Anyway, the New Wave movement obeys to   features both accurate and fairly vague enough to allow the emergence, in this genre, of some original artists and bands. Look at the playlist to be convinced...

About some guitar's bands

(The Jesus and Mary Chains)

"Sidewalking", par Jesus and Mary Chains, pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre n°27 consacré, comme annoncé la semaine dernière par les mêmes Jesus and Mary Chain, à des groupes à propos desquels Dominique Dupuis dit (dans l’album New Waves Vinyls) qu’ils sont là pour sauver le rock des années 80, ainsi qu’à certains parmi leurs plus dignes successeurs.

La playlist de cette émission, modeste et géniale, sera donc organisée autour de quatre formations qui ont eu l’excellente idée de ne pas mettre les guitares au clou, à savoir Jesus and the Mary Chains et The Smiths pour nos pauvres années 80, et Ceremony pour la transition avec aujourd’hui. L’émission sera par ailleurs l’occasion de faire plus ample connaissance avec un talentueux groupe parisien formé en 96 et encore en activité aujourd’hui, je veux parler d’Electric Press Kit (cf liens).

"Sidewalking" by The Jesus and Mary Chain to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter No.27 devoted, as announced last week, to those bands about which Dominique Dupuis said (in New Waves Vinyls) that they are here to save the rock of the 80s, and to some of their most worthy successors.

Then, the playlist of this modest and brilliant show will be organized around four teams who had the good idea not to put the guitars of, namely Jesus and the Mary Chains and The Smiths for our poor 80s, and Ceremony for the transition with today. The show will also be the opportunity to get acquainted with a talented group formed in Paris in 96 and still active today, I want to talk about Electric Press Kit (see links).

A tribute to John Mc Geoch

Le magnifique « Monitor » par Siouxsie and the Banshees pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre n°26 consacré, justement, à l’un des membres de the Banshees, guitariste émérite ayant également fait preuve de ses talents au sein de -entre autres groupes postpunk- Magazine et PIL (excusez du peu…): je veux parler de John Mc Geoch.

Je n’ai pu me procurer les titres de groupes avec lesquels celui-ci aura pu travailler en tant que producteur (comme The Glass ou The Wise Men), aussi la programmation de cette émision tournera autour de ceux auxquels il a participé en tant que musicien et, parfois, membre fondateur, comme ce fut le cas avec Magazine.

The amazing "Monitor" by Siouxsie and the Banshees to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter No. 26 devoted precisely to one of the members of the Banshees a great guitarist who also demonstrated his talent in - among other postpunk's bands- Magazine and PIL (no less ...): I mean John Mc Geoch.

I couldn't get some titles by bands with who he  worked as a producer (as The Glass and The Wise Men), so the playlist of this show will revolve around those which he participated in as a musician and sometimes as a founding member, as  it was the case with Magazine.

A tribute to Killing Joke

« Killing joke est un groupe épatant. Quatorze albums et une seule véritable déception : Outside The Gate (d’ailleurs censé être un disque solo du chanteur Jaz Coleman mais sorti sous le nom du groupe par Virgin). Qu’il pare son postpunk d’attributs dub, electro, new wave ou metal, KJ frappe toujours juste. Depuis son retour en 2003, le groupe a réconcilié ses diverses identités stylistiques et n’hésite pas à piocher dans tous ces genres au gré des morceaux (…). Outre la qualité des compositions, ce qui frappe (sur MMXII, leur dernier album), c’est l’omniprésence des synthétiseurs et leur intégration impeccable quel que soit le contexte, et, finalement, la cohérence de cet album plutôt varié. (On peut donc se poser la question de savoir si) seule la fin du monde les arrêtera…. » dixit Drago dans sa critique du dernier album de KJ parue dans la magazine Noise de ce mois de Mars.

"Requiem", dans la version du maxi, rééditée dans le coffret « Singles et Rarities » pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnésia, chapitre n°23 consacré, vous l’aurez deviné, à Killing Joke.

Pour en élaborer la playlist , j’ai du procéder à des choix bien difficiles, compte-tenu, comme rappelé en ouverture de la qualité de la production de ces messieurs. J’ai donc finalement opté pour un savant mélange  d’extraits d’albums phares (histoire aussi de réviser ses classiques avant leur prochain concert au Transbordeur de Lyon…) et de morceaux que l’on a moins l’habitude d’entendre sur les ondes. Vous excuserez par ailleurs mon absence de partialité : je suis en effet un fan inconditionnel, comme vous le prouvera, je l'espère, la programmation...

"Requiem" (the EP's version), reprinted in the box "Singles and Rarities" to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter No. 23 devoted, as you probably guessed it, to Killing Joke.

To develop the playlist, I had to make very difficult choices, considering, as mentioned in the opening, the quality of production of these gentlemen. So I opted for a blend of masterpieces ( in order to revise oneself's classics before their next concert in Lyon too...) and pieces that are less used to be hearing to on the radio. Please excuse  also my absence of partiality : I am indeed a huge fan, a gatherer, as the programmation will prove to you, well I hope...
