A tribute to Adrian Borland and The Sound (First part)

«Calling on Youth», par The Outsiders, pour ouvrir ce neuvième chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre consacré, comme annoncé sur le dernier post, à Adrian Borland, auteur compositeur chanteur et guitariste entre autres formations du groupe anglais The Sound. 

Avant d’atteindre une certaine forme de reconnaissance avec ses comparses de The Sound, Adrian Borland avait pu développer son jeu de guitare et son phrasé de voix au sein donc de The Outsiders, dont on dit qu’il aurait été le premier groupe punk à s’auto-produire, mais je crois que le titre est revendiqué par plusieurs… Quoiqu’il en soit, le premier enregistrement officiel de ce groupe date de 1977, en pleine vague punk donc, et l’influence de ce qui se passait à cette époque en Angletterre se remarque aussi bien dans les productions quand dans les sonorités de The Outsiders et ce même si on pourra rapidement noter, dans les paroles comme dans le rythme même des morceaux, une volonté de s’en démarquer. Si »Calling on Youth », en effet, est un titre punk, "Ode to Infinity" s’éloigne par exemple, et ce dès  son titre ("Ode à l’infini") qui dit la possibilité même d’un ideal,  des precepts du « No Future ». Quant à « Touch and Go », la rythmique délibérément mise au service des paroles préfigure déjà les productions de « The Sound » 

Notez par ailleurs que cette émission s'étalera sur deux posts, puisque je n’ai pu, au regard de la qualité des compositions et du nombre de projets ou collaborations de ce grand monsieur du Postpunk constituer une playlist ne tenant que sur la durée impartie d’une heure…. Et c’est tant mieux.

"Calling on Youth," by The Outsiders, to open this ninth chapter of Amnesia, chapter, as announced on the last post, devoted to Adrian Borland, singer songwriter and guitarist, among other formations, of the British band The Sound.Before reaching some kind of recognition with his stooges of The Sound, Adrian Borland was able to develop his guitar playing and voice phrasing  with The Outsiders, which is said to have been the first punk band to self-produce, but I think the title is claimed by several bands... Anyway, the first official record of this group was out in 1977, it means when the punk movement was at its height, and the influence of what was happening at that time in England is noticeable both in  productions and in the sounds of the Outsiders, even if one can quickly note, in the lyrics as in the rhythm of songs, a desire to  dress from it. If "Calling on Youth", in fact, is a punk title, "Ode toInfinity" departs for example (right from its title that says the very possibility of an ideal) from the precepts of the "No Future". As for "Touch and Go", the rhythmic deliberately placed at the service of lyrics prefigures the productions of "The Sound.  Please note also that this program will last two posts, cause I could not, according to the quality of the compositions and the number of projects or collaborations of this great man of postpunk, build a playlist only based  on the required period of  one hour .... And that's a good thing.

A first E.B.M. show

Mais à tout seigneur, tout honneur…

A en croire Wikipédia, "Electronic Body Music", abrégé en "E.B.M.", est un terme inventé par le groupe Front 242 pour qualifier leur musique électronique, froide et dansante. Dès ses débuts, Front 242 produisit en effet une musique électronique radicale et minimaliste, à la fois dansante et aux rythmes martiaux, soutenue par des samples issus de la télévision, ainsi que par une imagerie paramilitaire, ce qui leur a attiré de nombreux ennuis particulièrement envers leur pseudo-affiliation avec l'extrême-droite. Une affiliation formellement réfutée par le groupe dans un communiqué de presse.
Pour constituer la playlist de cette émission, je me suis inspiré d’une  indispensable compilation datant de 1988,  sobrement intitulé « This is electronic body music » et publiée par le très actif label Play It Again Sam. On y retrouve véritablement les principaux groupes qui ont fait (ou font encore parfois) les beaux jours de ce courant musical : Front 242, bien sûr, mais également The Weathermen, A Split Second, à Grumh et bien d’autres… Ne manquent guère à l’appel, à mon avis, pour cette période dite « Old School » tout du moins, que Klinik, curieusement, ou Absolute Body Control….
Y figure par contre « The Neon Judgement », dont le monstrueux "Chinese Black" apparaîtra en bonne place dans la playlist de cette émission.
L’écoute de ces premiers titres vous fera peut-être par ailleurs percevoir ce que je considère personnellement comme une autre des caractéristiques de ce mouvement, à savoir un son que je qualifierai d’organique.
Il s’agit en effet d’Electronic body music, le terme « body » renvoyant pourquoi pas à la danse, mais également, selon moi, à un autre aspect de la création comme de la production des groupes liés à ce mouvement. Quelque chose de l’odre du charnel, de l’organique donc, chaque son remplissant alors peut-être (et je me plais à le croire chez un groupe comme Front 242) une fonction particulière, et renvoyant à une émotion propre...

So, honour where honour is due...
According to Wikipedia, Electronic Body Music, abbreviated as EBM, is a term coined by the band Front 242 to talk about their electronic, dance and cold music. From the beginning, Front 242 produced a radical and minimalist electronic music, both dance and martial rhythms, supported by samples from television, as well as paramilitary imagery, which drew them some problems of pseudo-affiliation with the extreme right.  An affiliation refuted by the  band on a press release.
To create the playlist of this show, I inspired myself with an essential compilation from 1988, simply titled "This is electronic body music" and published by the very active label Play It Again Sat It includes the main groups that truly did (or still do sometimes) the good days of this musical movement: Front 242, of course, but also The Weatherman, A Split Second, A Grumh and many more ... Missing on this compilation, in my opinion, for this period known as "Old School" , Klinik, strangely, or Absolute Body Control ....
Well placed in fact, "The Neon Judgement," whose amazing title "Chinese Black" figures prominently in the playlist of this show.
Listening to these first songs you will perhaps also perceive what I personally consider  as another feature of this movement: a sound  I would call organic. This is indeed Electronic Body Music and the term "body" referring to dance (why not...), but also, in my view, to another aspect of these men's creation. Something  carnal or organic... as the playlist of the show will let you probably hear.

Humour belge?...
