A tribute to Bauhaus

Pour débuter ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre consacré comme annoncé la semaine dernière à Bauhaus, non pas le tout premier enregistrement du groupe, mais celui qui figure sur la très belle compilation « Natures mortes », compilation éditée à l’origine à destination du seul marché japonais, et censée proposer un éventail du catalogue du label 4AD, dont Bauhaus, justement, fut la première signature. Ce morceau, "Rose Garden Funeral of Sores" rend bien compte, à mon sens, de ce que pouvait proposer le groupe à cette époque, à ce moment de son existence. 

Tout a commencé en 1978 dans un lycée de Northamptonshire, en Grande-Bretagne. C’est là, en effet que naquit Bauhaus, sous l’impulsion de Peter Murphy et sur les cendres de The Craze, le groupe des frères Kevin et David Haskins (ce dernier prenant par la suite le pseudonyme de J.) et de Daniel Ash. Ce sera Bauhaus 1919, en référence  au mouvement architectural d’avant-garde fondé à Weimar cette année-là. Selon le dessein de son fondateur, tous ceux qui participaient à l'édification d’un bâtiment devaient être pénétré des principes du maître d'oeuvre et créer en harmonie avec lui, la partie complétant le tout pour tout embrasser en une seule forme.

Cette démarche sera celle du groupe, ainsi que la playlist de l'émission vous le fera sans doute entendre.

To start this new chapter of Amnesia, chapter number 4, dedicated as announced last week to Bauhaus, not the first recording of the group, but the one on the beautiful compilation "Still Life", compilation edited originally only for the Japanese market, and meant to offer a range of 4AD label's catalog, of whom Bauhaus, precisely, was the first signature. This song, "Rose Garden Funeral of Sores", is according to me a good example of what the group could offer at that time, at this time of its existence.

It all started in 1978 in a school in Northamptonshire, Great Britain. Bauhaus is born there, led by Peter Murphy,  on the ashes of The Craze, the group of the brothers Kevin and David Haskins (who will take the pseudonym of David J.) and Daniel Ash. This will be Bauhaus 1919, referring to the architectural movement of avant-garde  founded in Weimar precisely that year. According to the intention of its founder, all those who participated in the construction of a building should be imbued with the principles of the supervisor and create in harmony with him, each part completing the whole thing in order to make a single form.

This process will be one of the group,  as the playlist of the show  will let  you probably hear.

A first Synthpop show

Soft Cell, avec "The Girl with the Patent Later Face", pour ouvrir ce troisième numéro d’Amnesia, numéro consacré, comme annoncé la semaine dernière par Hysterica Passio, à la Synthpop. Ce titre, qui est loin d’être l’un des plus connus du groupe de Marc Almond et de David Ball est le second du « Some Bizzare Album », compilation éditée en 1981 par le label Some Bizarre et qui fait figure de référence aujourd’hui.  Faisant partie des toutes premières productions du label, le "Some Bizzare Album" regroupe en effet les morceaux de groupes anglais débutants, parmi lesquels Soft Cell, donc, mais également B-Movie ou Depeche Mode. Excusez du peu…

On a rapidement trouvé, dès Kraftwerk et son "Radioactivity" peut-être (et ce bien au-delà des frontières des pays d’Europe de l’Ouest), dans les premiers titres de ce que l’on appellera ensuite la synthpop tout ce qui allait faire les caractéristiques, mais également le succès, de ce courant musical : des sons plutôt bruts et froids (j’ai pu lire « stériles » et l’idée me plaît bien sans que je sache vraiment dire pourquoi…), sur une rythmique minimaliste et syncopée, mais au service de mélodies souvent accrocheuses et servies par des voix généralement plus en nuances que pour le Postpunk ou la Coldwave.

Depeche Mode et Soft Cell sont devenus des stars, mais, souvent, les groupes de synthpop restent les groupes d’un seul titre, soit de leur propre fait, soit parce que ce titre se retrouve, et ce jusqu’à épuisement parfois de ce qui peut en faire l’intérêt, sur un nombre impressionnant de compilations plus ou moins inspirées. 

Ce ne sera pas le cas, toutefois (du moins je l'espère...) pour les titres suivants....

Amnesia - T1 - Chap.3 (ok!)

"The Girl with the Patent Later Face", by Soft Cell to open this third chapter of Amnesia, third show devoted, as announced last week by Hysterica Passio, to Synthpop. This title, which is far from being one of the best known  of Marc Almond and David Ball's band, is the second of the "Some Bizarre Album", compilation edited in 1981 by the Some Bizarre label and which is a masterpiece today . Being part of the first productions of the label, the "Some Bizarre Album" indeed includes some titles by English beginners bands, Soft Cell, of course, but also B-Movie or Depeche Mode. No less ... 

The features, but also the origin of the success of this musical movement, were soon to be found - from Kraftwerk and "Radioactivity" perhaps (and this far beyond the borders of countries of Western Europe) -  in the first titles that will be later called synthpop (and Minimal wave...): rather raw and cold sounds (I've read "sterile" and the idea pleases me even if I couldn't say why ...), a minimalist and syncopated rythm,  often catchy melodies served by voices generally  more nuanced than in the case of Postpunk or Coldwave. 

Depeche Mode and Soft Cell have become stars, but often synthpop's bands were  bands of one title: either beccause the split or the decision of the band itslelf   or because this title was the one to be found on an impressive number of more or less inspired compilations, again and again, losing in this way its interest. It won't be the case, however (at least I hope ...) for the following titles ...        

                                                                                         

A first coldwave show

Asylum Party, un premier groupe français, pour ouvrir ce second numéro d’Amnésia, numéro consacré, comme annoncé la semaine dernière par Odessa, à la Coldwave. Ce premier titre (extrait de l’album Borderline) est d’ailleurs celui qui ouvre la superbe compilation éditée par le label Infrastition et consacrée à ce mouvement qui a eu une résonnance particulière en France, où l’appellation Coldwave a été inventée pour désigner cette musique froide venue d’Outre-Manche et caractérisée par un certain mal être existentiel, comme vous allez pouvoir le constater sans doute avec la playlist de cette émission.

Ainsi "Heaven Street", par Death In June,  le groupe de Douglas Pearce. Death In June est un groupe actuellement catalogué Neofolk, mais on retrouve dans ce morceau extrait de la compilation Misanthropy, comme dans bien d’autres de la  même période du groupe, toutes les caractéristiques du genre. De fait, le son Coldwave se caractérise selon moi tout d’abord par la prédominance de la section rythmique, généralement lente et pesante, avec des guitares en surimpression, aux notes tendues jusqu’à la dissonnance et par  un usage métaphorique des synthétiseurs, les sons employés étant ceux les plus "froid" possible...

Amnesia - T1 - Chap.2 (ok!)

Asylum Party, the first French group to open this second chapter of Amnesia, a show devoted, as announced last week by Odessa, to theColdwave. This first title (from the album Borderline) is also the one which opens the amazing compilation edited by Infrastition label devoted to this movement and which had a particular resonance in France, where the word Coldwave was invented to describe this cold music and came from across the Channel, characterized by a certain existential unease, as you'll see with the playlist of the show.

So, "Heaven  Street", by Death In June, the band of Douglas Pearce. Death In June  is now a band cataloged Neofolk, but in this piece taken from the compilation Misanthropy, as in many others by the same period of the band, one found all the features of the genre. In fact, in my opinion, the sound Coldwave is  characterized firstly by the predominance of the rhythm section, generally slow and cumbersome, with  overlaid guitars  with hints of dissonance tense up and a metaphoric use of synthetizers, cause of the use of the coldest sounds of those instruments...
