A Tribute to P.I.L.

"Public Image" le premier single du groupe pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre 2 du troisième Tome de nos aventures, consacré, comme annoncé la semaine dernière par leur titre « Low life » à ce groupe phare du postpunk qu’est Public Image Limited – ou PIL pour les intimes.

Suite à la séparation des Sex Pistols en janvier 1978, Lydon fit un voyage de trois semaines en Jamaïque avec le patron de Virgin Records Richard Branson, voyage durant lequel il devait officiellement aider à la recherche de nouveaux artistes reggae. Moins officiellement, Branson avait également invité les membres du groupe new wave américain Devo (groupe dont nous écouterons un titre en fin d’émission), pour proposer à Lydon de devenir leur chanteur, mais celui-ci déclina l’offre… et tant mieux.  Après ces vacances, Lydon approcha Jah Wobble pour débuter un nouveau groupe. Ce rapprochement semblait naturel :  les deux comparses se connaissaient depuis 73 et leur fréquentation commune des magasins de vêtements rockabilly ou sado-masochiste Let It Rock et Sex, gérés par le couple Malcolm McLaren / Vivienne Westwood. L’amour de Wobble pour la basse date de cette époque et, en fait, de sa découverte du Dub. Lydon localisa ensuite Keith Levene (né Julian Levene) qu'il avait rencontré en tournée à la mi-1976 alors que celui-ci était un membre des Clash et avait également fondé l’éphémère formation «Flowers of Romance». Le batteur originel était Jim Walker (né Donat Walker), un étudiant canadien récemment arrivé au Royaume-Uni, qui répondit à une annonce dans un magazine musical hebdomadaire.

Encouragé par le succès de leur premier single le groupe s’attela au premier album, qu’il composa collectivement sur la base d’improvisations. 

En mars 2005, le magazine musical Q magazine attribue au titre"Public Image" réédité sur First issue la 45e place dans sa liste des 100 plus grandes chansons à la guitare. Dans le même article, on prétendait également que l'album avait été utilisé par des psychiatres dans le traitement de patients dépressifs pour leur montrer qu'ils n'étaient pas seuls….

"Public Image" the first single from the band to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter 2 of the third Volume of our adventures, dedicated (as announced at the end of the last show with their title "Low Life") to this essential postpunk band that is Public Image Limited - or PIL for the happy fews.

Following the separation of the Sex Pistols in January 1978, Lydon took a three week trip to Jamaica with the boss of Virgin Records Richard Branson, trip during which he was officially here to help him find new reggae artists. Less formally, Branson had also invited members of the American new wave band Devo (group whose song we listened to at the end of the show), to offer him to become their singer, but Lydon fortunately declined the offer... and many more. After these holidays, Lydon approached Jah Wobble to start a new group. This rapprochement seemed natural: the two men had known each other since 73 and their joint attendance for rockabilly or sadomasochistic clothing stores as Let It Rock and Sex, the both managed by Malcolm McLaren / Vivienne Westwood. The love of Wobble bass guitar dates from this period and, in fact, his discovery of Dub. Lydon then located Keith Levene (born Julian Levene) he had met on tour in mid-1976 while he was a member of the Clash and had also founded the short-lived band "Flowers of Romance." The original drummer was Jim Walker (born Donat Walker), a Canadian student recently arrived in the United Kingdom, and who answered to an advertisement in a weekly music magazine.

Encouraged by the success of its first single the group got down to the first album,  being composed collectively on the basis of improvisations.

In March 2005, the music magazine Q magazine gave title "Public Image" the 45th place in its list of the 100 greatest songs on guitar. In the same article, it is also claimed that the album had been used by psychiatrists in treating depressed patients to show them that they were not alone ....

From Punk to Postpunk

"Submission", par les Sex Pistols, pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnésia, chapitre n°22 consacré, comme annoncé la semaine dernière par les mêmes Sex Pistols, aux liens qui ont pu exister entre Punk et Postpunk. Nous allons donc suivre aujourd’hui, à travers la programmation, la trajectoire d’un certain nombre d’artistes ou de groupes qui auront évolué entre les deux mouvements et voir comment on peut expliquer cette  évolution.

Ainsi, John Lydon, alors qu’il était encore chanteur des Sex pistols, avait horrifié l’ensemble de son public en faisant part de ses goûts musicaux lors d’une émission intitulée « The Punk and his Music », diffusée le 16 juillet 77, et qui fit alterner interview et programmation de son invité. Les morceaux de reggae et d’arty-rock sélectionnés par Rotten préfiguraient cependant  le son de PIL : lignes de basse dub quasi hypnotiques, guitares en arpège et voix lugubres et rendues paranoïaques par une forme aiguisée de conscience du monde tel qu’il va. Nous écouterons cependant « Rise » (histoire de pratiquer le grand écart…) l’un des tubes du groupe, et morceau témoignant de l’incursion de John Lydon (seul membre encore en activité du combo d’origine en 86) vers une musique plus accessible.

"Submission", by the Sex Pistols, to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter No. 22 devoted, as announced at the end of the last show by the same Sex Pistols, to the links that have existed between Punk and Postpunk. So we will follow today, through the playlist, the way of a number of artists and groups that have moved between the two movements and see how we can explain this trend.

Thus, John Lydon, while he was still the singer of the Sex Pistols had horrified the entire audience of the bands by sharing his musical tastes in a program titled "The Punk and his Music", released July 16th in 77, in which guest programming and interview alternated. Pieces of reggae and rock arty-selected by Rotten prefigured however the sound of PIL:  almost hypnotic dub bass lines, arpeggiated guitars and mournful voice, made paranoid by a sharp form of consciousness of the world as it goes. However, we hear "Rise" (just in order to do the splits ...) one of the tubes of the group and song reflecting the incursion of John Lydon (only member still active from the original band in 86) into a kind of more accessible music.
