From Punk to Postpunk

-Submission (Sex Pistols)
-Rise (Public Image Ltd.)
-California Über Alles (Dead Kennedys)
-Boredom  (The Buzzcocks)
-Something's Gone Wrong Again (Buzzcocks)
-Shot By Both Sides (Magazine)
-Warsaw (Warsaw)
-Autosuggestion (Joy Division)
-One to infinity (The Outsiders)
- As Feeling Dies (The Sound)
-Surgeon's girl (Wire)
-Pink flag (Wire)
-I Should Have Known Better (Wire)

"Submission", by the Sex Pistols, to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter No. 22 devoted, as announced at the end of the last show by the same Sex Pistols, to the links that have existed between Punk and Postpunk. So we will follow today, through the playlist, the way of a number of artists and groups that have moved between the two movements and see how we can explain this trend.
Thus, John Lydon, while he was still the singer of the Sex Pistols had horrified the entire audience of the bands by sharing his musical tastes in a program titled "The Punk and his Music", released July 16th in 77, in which guest programming and interview alternated. Pieces of reggae and rock arty-selected by Rotten prefigured however the sound of PIL:  almost hypnotic dub bass lines, arpeggiated guitars and mournful voice, made paranoid by a sharp form of consciousness of the world as it goes. However, we hear "Rise" (just in order to do the splits ...) one of the tubes of the group and song reflecting the incursion of John Lydon (only member still active from the original band in 86) into a kind of more accessible music.

"Ether" by Gang of Four, to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter No. 21 devoted, as announced at the end of the last show by the same band, to the city of Leeds. Though less prolific than its neighbours Manchester, Liverpool or even Sheffield, Leeds has seen the emergence of some well known bands, especially concerning the genre that interests us here, and we will try to understand why...

A first minimal show

-Who's Really Listening  (Mark Lane)
-Radiance  (Oppenheimer Analysis)
-Electric Girls in Heaven (S-H-M)
-Schizophrenic Freddy (The Neon Judgement)
-Automatic I (Absolute Body Control)
-Mike 16 (S-H-M)
-Care (SS-Say)
-I hear the bells (Danton's voice)
-Mike 71 (S-H-M)
-Second time is different (Asmodaeus)
-Hade (Vita Noctis)
-Demo 112 (S-H-M)
-Damaged Good (Gang of Four) ---- Pour annoncer la prochaine émission consacrée à la ville de Leeds.

"Who's Really Listening" by Mark Lane, from the compilation "The Minimal Wave Tapes: Volume One," to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter No. 20 devoted to, as announced last week by SHM, to Minimal Wave as a movement, or at least, as a genre. This therefore leads us to speak also about the eponymous label created by Veronika Vasicka to promote this genre. To build the playlist of this show, I was inspired by the major label compilations edited by this label (see links) and the discography of SHM (see also links ...) will also serve as a clue. I also found many valuable informations in an interview by Veronika, interview published in August 2010 on the website Hartzine.
The term "Minimal Wave" appeared only few times ago and concerns songs that we previously referenced under the terms of Synthpop, Techno Pop, Minimal and Electronic, essentially according to the year of production or geographical origin of the bands. Those bands  recorded their music on cassette or vinyl that  they often distributed themselves and their music was made with synths and drum machines, and remained faithful to artificial sounds rather than trying to make them disappear. According to Veronika, actually, "These bands have never tried to use synths to imitate the mainstream pop groups of the period. However, it is true that some song structures are similar to those of pop. This gives a very  purified new wave "as the following titles will maybe let you hear.

A first industrial show

-Feurio ! (Einstürzende Neubauten)
-Antenna (Kraftwerk)
-Distant Dreams (Throbbing Gristle)
-Nag Nag Nag (Cabaret Voltaire)
-Mekkano (SPK)
-Der Mussolini (DAF)
-Mindphazer (Frontline Assembly)
-Scare Crow (Ministry)
-Did you miss me ? (The Young Gods)
-Eraser (Nine Inch Nails
-Trust Me (The Swans)
-Mike 99 (S-H-M) ---- Pour annoncer la prochaine émission, consacrée à la Minimale Wave

"Feurio" by Einstürzende Neubauten to open this new chapter of Amnesia Chapter No. 19 devoted, as announced last week by The Swans to  industrial music, certainly a violent music, but just like the society in which it unfolds. For the text of this show,I was heavily inspired by articles written by Emmanuel Grynszpan and Schizophil and published on the net.
Just like punk music,  as it is contemporary,  industrial music is at first to considere as a reaction to the ambient music scene of the late '70s, dominated by a sterile and soulless music, music marked and led astray by the star system . This kind of music has  subversive motives and aims in a more radical approach than punks (and probably more reflective and political) to express the rejection of the values and references of the society.

Musically, a common denominator to the founding groups of the genre (Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire and SPK mainly) seems to have been the desire to create an ethnic music for the industrial age, already started by Kraftwerk when they announced that they have created an "Industrial Volkmusik".
