A Tribute to P.I.L.

"Public Image" le premier single du groupe pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre 2 du troisième Tome de nos aventures, consacré, comme annoncé la semaine dernière par leur titre « Low life » à ce groupe phare du postpunk qu’est Public Image Limited – ou PIL pour les intimes.

Suite à la séparation des Sex Pistols en janvier 1978, Lydon fit un voyage de trois semaines en Jamaïque avec le patron de Virgin Records Richard Branson, voyage durant lequel il devait officiellement aider à la recherche de nouveaux artistes reggae. Moins officiellement, Branson avait également invité les membres du groupe new wave américain Devo (groupe dont nous écouterons un titre en fin d’émission), pour proposer à Lydon de devenir leur chanteur, mais celui-ci déclina l’offre… et tant mieux.  Après ces vacances, Lydon approcha Jah Wobble pour débuter un nouveau groupe. Ce rapprochement semblait naturel :  les deux comparses se connaissaient depuis 73 et leur fréquentation commune des magasins de vêtements rockabilly ou sado-masochiste Let It Rock et Sex, gérés par le couple Malcolm McLaren / Vivienne Westwood. L’amour de Wobble pour la basse date de cette époque et, en fait, de sa découverte du Dub. Lydon localisa ensuite Keith Levene (né Julian Levene) qu'il avait rencontré en tournée à la mi-1976 alors que celui-ci était un membre des Clash et avait également fondé l’éphémère formation «Flowers of Romance». Le batteur originel était Jim Walker (né Donat Walker), un étudiant canadien récemment arrivé au Royaume-Uni, qui répondit à une annonce dans un magazine musical hebdomadaire.

Encouragé par le succès de leur premier single le groupe s’attela au premier album, qu’il composa collectivement sur la base d’improvisations. 

En mars 2005, le magazine musical Q magazine attribue au titre"Public Image" réédité sur First issue la 45e place dans sa liste des 100 plus grandes chansons à la guitare. Dans le même article, on prétendait également que l'album avait été utilisé par des psychiatres dans le traitement de patients dépressifs pour leur montrer qu'ils n'étaient pas seuls….

"Public Image" the first single from the band to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter 2 of the third Volume of our adventures, dedicated (as announced at the end of the last show with their title "Low Life") to this essential postpunk band that is Public Image Limited - or PIL for the happy fews.

Following the separation of the Sex Pistols in January 1978, Lydon took a three week trip to Jamaica with the boss of Virgin Records Richard Branson, trip during which he was officially here to help him find new reggae artists. Less formally, Branson had also invited members of the American new wave band Devo (group whose song we listened to at the end of the show), to offer him to become their singer, but Lydon fortunately declined the offer... and many more. After these holidays, Lydon approached Jah Wobble to start a new group. This rapprochement seemed natural: the two men had known each other since 73 and their joint attendance for rockabilly or sadomasochistic clothing stores as Let It Rock and Sex, the both managed by Malcolm McLaren / Vivienne Westwood. The love of Wobble bass guitar dates from this period and, in fact, his discovery of Dub. Lydon then located Keith Levene (born Julian Levene) he had met on tour in mid-1976 while he was a member of the Clash and had also founded the short-lived band "Flowers of Romance." The original drummer was Jim Walker (born Donat Walker), a Canadian student recently arrived in the United Kingdom, and who answered to an advertisement in a weekly music magazine.

Encouraged by the success of its first single the group got down to the first album,  being composed collectively on the basis of improvisations.

In March 2005, the music magazine Q magazine gave title "Public Image" the 45th place in its list of the 100 greatest songs on guitar. In the same article, it is also claimed that the album had been used by psychiatrists in treating depressed patients to show them that they were not alone ....

Une petite perle pour débuter cette troisième saison, ce troisième tome de nos aventures:  il s’agit en l’occurrence d’un titre du groupe gothique belge Erato, titre paru sur leur album III en 2002 et intitulé  "Amnesia".

A little jewel to start this third season, this third volume of our adventures: it is a title of the Belgian gothic band Erato, title broadcasted  on their third album III in 2002 and titled "Amnesia".

This title will be used as generic for this third volume of your favorite program, still strictly oriented postpunk as the playlist above will probably show you again.

This first chapter will indeed have to be considered on the one hand as a "summary of previous episodes" and  on the other hand as an introduction to what you will have to wait for the coming year.

Postpunk in Brazil

"Tao Perto" par le groupe Cabine C pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre n°24 du second tome de nos aventures, qui sera consacré, comme annoncé sur le dernier post par le titre  "Bunker de Papel" du groupe Elegia (groupe dont nous entendrons un autre morceau dans cette émission) au meilleur de la musique obscure brésilienne.

Quand on songe au Brésil, ce sont souvent des images de cartes postales qui nous viennent à l’esprit : le carnaval de Rio, les plages de Copacabana ou de Bahia , les strings, la Samba, la Bossa-Nova... C’est alors oublier que le pays a vécu sous la dictature de 1964 à 85. À partir de 1964, l'état de droit fut progressivement violé: tandis que, pour beaucoup, le coup d'Etat n'ouvrait que sur "une remise en ordre" anti-communiste provisoire du pays dans le contexte de la Guerre froide, les militaires vont se maintenir durablement au pouvoir et progressivement installer une véritable dictature. 

La musique apparut alors comme un moyen d’expression privilégié pour dire (en parallèle à la volonté de démocratisation grandissante au début des 80’s) le besoin de parer l’avenir d’autres idéaux. De nombreux titres ou noms de groupes se font d’ailleurs le reflet de cet engagement ainsi que la playlist de ce soir va tenter de vous le prouver.

"Tao Perto" by the band Cabine C to open this new chapter of Amnesia, chapter No. 24 of the second volume of our adventures, which will be devoted, as announced on the last post with the title "Bunker de Papel" by Elegia (band of whom we'll hear another song later in the show) to the best of Brazilian dark music.
When you think about Brazil, often postcard images come to mind: the Rio's carnival, Copacabana or Bahia's beaches, strings, Samba, Bossa Nova ... Then we forget that the country has lived under the dictatorship from 1964 to 85. From 1964, the rules of law have been progressively violated:  whereas, for many people, the coup only opened to a temporary anticommunist reordering of the country in the context of the Cold War,  military men will permanently keep  the power  and progressively install a real dictatorship.

Music then appeared as a privileged means of expression, in order to say (in parallel to the will of  democratization in the early 80's) the need to embellish the future of other ideals. Many titles and bands names are also a reflection of this commitment, as the playlist of this show will try to prove you.

A first xmas gift for 2013

"Il Est Ne Le Divin Enfant" par Siouxsie and the Banshees (morceau enregistré à l’occasion de fêtes de fin d’année pour une émission « Les Enfants du rock » diffusée à l’époque, 1982,  sur une chaîne de télévision française, d’où le fait que la Sioux s’exprime pour l’occasion, donc, dans la langue de Molière), "Il Est Ne Le Divin Enfant", donc, pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnesia, Chapitre n°12 du Troisième Tome de l’émission qui sera consacré au rôle joué par Jésus dans la musique postpunk… tout un programme. 

Ce programme d’ailleurs débutera vraiment par la mise en garde suivante, "This Is Heresy" par Christian Death, et ce histoire de prévenir les auditeurs non avertis de ce que j’ai bien conscience de ce que je propose et du décalage entre le caractère sacré de la célébration de la naissance du Christ et mon propos qui, lui, ne l’est en rien…. sacré.

Pour les curieux, les hérétiques et les amateurs de Ausgang, Eraas, Bauhaus, White Lord Jesus, Jesus and Mary Chain et autres... joyeux Noêl!!!!

"Il est né le divin enfant" by Siouxsie and the Banshees (song recorded on Christmas' occasion for a French TV program " The Children of rock ' broadcasted in 1982,  hence the fact that the Sioux speaks in the language of Molière and not the one of Shakespeare) , Il est né le divin enfant" - so - to open this new chapter of Amnesia , Chapter n°12 of the third season of the show,  devoted to the role of Jesus in the postpunk music ... such a program .

This program also really begins with the following warning , "This Is Heresy " by Christian Death , in order to prevent unsuspecting listeners that I am aware of what I am proposing and of the gap between the sacred character of the celebration of the birth of Christ and  my remarks, which are  asolutly not .... sacred. You will know...

For the curious, heretics and other fans of Ausgang , Eraas , Bauhaus , White Lord Jesus, Jesus and Mary Chain and more ... Merry Xmas!!!!

A fourth Postpunk show

"Anthrax" par Gang of Four pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre N°5 consacré, comme annoncé sur le dernier post par les mêmes Gang of Four au site Wavenlegth 1976-1984 et plus particulièrement à l’article qui s’y trouve publié à propos du mouvement postpunk. Wavelength est un site remarquable pour la qualité des articles proposés, tant sur la forme que sur le fond (nous y reviendrons plus tard…). Il est en effet fort agréable de lire des articles particulièrement bien écrits, et ce dans le sens où la langue utilisée n’est pas matière à des effets de manche par souvent trop pompeux et autres cuistreries, mais témoigne d’une vraie réflexion portée sur le thème abordé. Il est vrai que les sources documentaires irrigant les différentes pages du site sont fort pertinentes  et la page intitulées « Documents » fourmille  ainsi de références en articles, livres et films toutes plus alléchantes les unes que les autres (cf "Liens" à droite de la page)

Revenant par exemple sur le terme même de Postpunk, le principal animateur du site reprend les propos de Greil Marcus lorsqu’il désigne comme Postpunk les groupes New wave pouvant être considérés comme l’avant-garde du rock. Certes, ceux-ci ont du inventer des formes d’expression musicales nouvelles, dépassant tant en termes d’audace que de provocation celles exploitées précédemment (et ce même par le punk), ainsi que la playlist de l'émission vous le fera sans doute entendre.

"Anthrax" by Gang of Four to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter No. 5 devoted, as announced on the last post by the same band, to the website Wavelength (1976 to 1984) and more particularly to the article which  is published in, about the postpunk movement. Wavenlegth is an outstanding site for the quality of items offered, both in form and substance (please see "Links" to the right of the page)
Returning, for example to the  term of "Postpunk", the main host of the site uses one of the article by Greil Marcus where  the New wave bands who can be considered as theavant-garde of rock music are said to be Postpunk. Indeed  they have to invent new forms of musical expression, then  challenge those previously used (even by punk) as the playlist of the show will show you (I guess...).

From Punk to Postpunk

"Submission", par les Sex Pistols, pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnésia, chapitre n°22 consacré, comme annoncé la semaine dernière par les mêmes Sex Pistols, aux liens qui ont pu exister entre Punk et Postpunk. Nous allons donc suivre aujourd’hui, à travers la programmation, la trajectoire d’un certain nombre d’artistes ou de groupes qui auront évolué entre les deux mouvements et voir comment on peut expliquer cette  évolution.

Ainsi, John Lydon, alors qu’il était encore chanteur des Sex pistols, avait horrifié l’ensemble de son public en faisant part de ses goûts musicaux lors d’une émission intitulée « The Punk and his Music », diffusée le 16 juillet 77, et qui fit alterner interview et programmation de son invité. Les morceaux de reggae et d’arty-rock sélectionnés par Rotten préfiguraient cependant  le son de PIL : lignes de basse dub quasi hypnotiques, guitares en arpège et voix lugubres et rendues paranoïaques par une forme aiguisée de conscience du monde tel qu’il va. Nous écouterons cependant « Rise » (histoire de pratiquer le grand écart…) l’un des tubes du groupe, et morceau témoignant de l’incursion de John Lydon (seul membre encore en activité du combo d’origine en 86) vers une musique plus accessible.

"Submission", by the Sex Pistols, to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter No. 22 devoted, as announced at the end of the last show by the same Sex Pistols, to the links that have existed between Punk and Postpunk. So we will follow today, through the playlist, the way of a number of artists and groups that have moved between the two movements and see how we can explain this trend.

Thus, John Lydon, while he was still the singer of the Sex Pistols had horrified the entire audience of the bands by sharing his musical tastes in a program titled "The Punk and his Music", released July 16th in 77, in which guest programming and interview alternated. Pieces of reggae and rock arty-selected by Rotten prefigured however the sound of PIL:  almost hypnotic dub bass lines, arpeggiated guitars and mournful voice, made paranoid by a sharp form of consciousness of the world as it goes. However, we hear "Rise" (just in order to do the splits ...) one of the tubes of the group and song reflecting the incursion of John Lydon (only member still active from the original band in 86) into a kind of more accessible music.

A third postpunk show

« Bleed » par Blitz pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre n°18 consacré, comme annoncé la semaine dernière par Gang of Four, au postpunk, mouvement  qui constitue, vous l’aurez remarqué, la véritable ossature de cette émission. Pour en élaborer la playlist, je me suis inspiré des principales compilations consacrées au genre, comme par exemple, « The Original Anthems From The 70's And 80's Post-Punk Scene » compilation de 3cd publiée en 2009 par Music brokers, label argentin et/ ou « Rough Trade Shops », compilation de 2cd parue chez Mute en 2003. 

(Cela m’a conforté dans mes idées par rapport à ce que j’avais pu vous proposer jusqu’alors et m’a permis de découvrir certaines petites perles, ce dont je vais vous faire profiter ce soir.)
Ce mouvement musical, même s’il est apparu vers la fin des années 1970 et en écho à la déferlante punk, et même s’il se voit souvent représenté par des groupes emblématiques tels que Public Image Ltd, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Birthday Party, Gang of Four, Joy Division, ou encore Wire, groupes estamplillés 80’s, connaît encore une certaine résonnance, un certain echo aujourd’hui. 

De fait, ce que ces groupes cherchent à exprimer  n’est lié ni à une époque ni à un lieu en particulier, la posture générale des artistes rattachés à la mouvance post-punk pouvant se résumer dans cette déclaration d’Allen Ravenstine de Pere Ubu en 1978 : « Les Sex Pistols ont chanté 'No Future', mais il y a un futur et nous essayons de le construire ».

"Bleed" by Blitz to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter No. 18 devoted, as announced last week by the Gang of Four,   to the postpunk movement, which is, you may have noticed, the structure or skeleton of this show. To develop the playlist, I drew my inspiration from some major compilations devoted to the genre, such as "The Original Anthems From The 70's And 80's Post-Punk Scene" compilation of 3cd published in 2009 by Music brokers,  a label from Argentina and / or "Rough Trade Shops" a compilation of 2cd  published by Mute in 2003.

(I was confirmed in my ideas about what I could offer you so far and it allowed me to discover some beads as you will see during this show... I hope.)

This musical movement, even if it appeared in the late 1970s like a kind of echo wave to punk music, and even if it is often represented by iconic groups such as Public Image Ltd., Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Birthday Party, Gang of Four, Joy Division, Wire or groups, labelled 80's, is still having a certain resonance, a certain echo today.

In fact, what these groups are trying to express is not bound to time or to a specific location, the general posture of the artists associated with the post-punk movement can be summed up in this sentence by Allen Ravenstine (of the band "Pere Ubu") who said in 1978: "the Sex Pistols sang 'No future', but there is a future and we are trying to build it."

Quelqu’un pourrait-il me rappeler en quelle année nous sommes ? 1979 ? The Cure, The Fall, PIL, Wire, Killing Joke, The Stranglers, et Echo and the Bunnymen,  viennent ou s’apprêtent à sortir un album… Peter Hook tourne sous le nom de Joy Division, les Buzzcoks sont toujours maintenus en vie….

« India » par The Psychedelic Furs pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre n°15, consacré, comme annoncé la semaine dernière par Scritti Politti à des groupes ayant navigué entre postpunk et new wave, ou annonciateurs de ce dernier genre musical, puisque se situant (entre autres raisons) à l'avant garde de la musique de la fin des années 70.
Ainsi, The Psychedelic Furs a été créé en 1979 dans le sud de Londres, par les frères Butler. Leur nom, déjà (toujours selon Dominique Dupuis - cf "Références"), se voulait sans doute une provocation lancée au visage du punk dominant, car renvoyant (à mon avis cette fois) aux années Glamrock. Mais cette provocation, ou cette manifestation dans le nom même du groupe d’un désir de faire, de construire autre chose, se retrouve dans les moyens dont celui-ci s’est doté pour y parvenir, c'est à dire dans les incantations dépressives et vénéneuses du chant et dans un son lourd et toujours obsédant. Leur premier album, éponyme, et co-produit par Martin Hannett est une vraie merveille du  genre : ainsi, la basse qui avait lors de la décennie précédente été noyée sous les déluges électriques et psyché des guitares s’impose de nouveau comme un point d’appui rythmique dans des chansons parfois très élaborées. En même temps, la voix réinjecte une tradition mélodique et un chant plaintif qui s’opposent aux éructations primitives (lesquelles avaient cependant parfois leur charme…) . L’introduction du morceau, assez longue et  toute en douceur, doit s’inscrire dans la même démarche de rupture.

Même chose avec The Stranglers pour qui « La musique (à en croire leur premier guitariste, Hugh Cornwell) n’est pas une carrière, mais une émotion » ou pour Simple Minds, avant qu’ils ne se disputent le titre de plus grand groupe du monde avec U2.

"India" by The Psychedelic Furs to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter No. 15, devoted, as announced last week by Scritti Politti to groups having sailed between postpunk and new wave, or harbingers of that genre, being (among other reasons) at the forefront of the music of the late 70s.

Thus, The Psychedelic Furs was established in 1979 in South London, by the Butler brothers. Their name (again according to Dominique Dupuis - see "References"), was intended as a provocation probably hurled at the punk dominating through referring (in my opinion this time) to Glamrock years. But this provocation, or the fact that the choice of the name of the band can be read like a desire to do so, to build something else, can be found in the means it has adopted to achieve:  depressive and poisonous incantations of singing and a heavy and always haunting sound. Their first album, eponymous, and co-produced by Martin Hannett is a gem of its kind: so, the bass, which during the previous decade was drowned under the deluge of electric guitars and psyche, is needed again as a point supporting rhythm in sometimes very elaborate songs. At the same time, the voice injects a tradition and a plaintive melody that oppose to belching primitive (which, however, sometimes had their charm ...). The introduction of the piece, rather long and very smooth, must be part of the same approach of fracture.

The same with The Stranglers, for whom "music (to believe their first guitarist, Hugh Cornwell) is not a career, but an emotion" and Simple Minds, before they compete for the title of largest group in the world with U2.
