Postpunk vs New Wave

Pour débuter ce cinquième chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre consacré  au postpunk, un premier morceau emblématique du genre : "Hero", par Remain in Silence. Le groupe de Hannovre, formé au milieu des années 80 et actif jusqu’au début des années 2000 compte quatre albums à son actif, et "hero"  est extrait du premier : "Monument". Le phrasé de guitare aussi bien que le timbre de voix (assez proche, sur ce morceau, de celui du chanteur de Red Lorry) participe bien de cette forme de rage, ou tout du moins de colère contenue à laquelle j’ai pu faire précédemment allusion. Cette colère, contrairement au punk à mon avis, ne va pas exploser, mais rester sourde, comme une forme de menace. D’où cette idée de tension qui m’est chère pour caractériser le genre.

Sachez aussi, que les playlists des émissions de cette semaine et de la semaine prochaine ont été établies en parallèle, et ce dans le but d’illustrer mon propos sur les mouvements postpunk et new wave. Il est certes une maladie typiquement française qui vise à tout cataloguer ou étiqueter, mais tel n’est pas mon propos ici. Au contraire. C’est selon moi à l’auditeur de terminer en quelque sorte les œuvres jouées ici, et c’est de la manière dont il recevra les émotions véhiculées  par ces titres qu’il les qualifiera de postpunk, cold ou new wave...

†o start this fifth chapter of Amnesia, chapter devoted to postpunk, a first iconic piece of the movement: "Hero", by Remain in Silence. The Hannover group, formed in the mid 80s and active until the early 2000s, has four albums to his credit, and "hero" is taken from the first:"Monument". The phrasing of  guitar as well as the tone of voice (close enough, on this song, to the one of the singer of Red Lorry) shows much of this rage , or at least, suppressed anger that I have previously mentioned. This anger, unlike in punk music in my opinion, will not explode, but remain deaf, as a form of threat. Hence this idea of tension that is dear to me to characterize the genre.

Please note also that the playlists of this week's show and of the next one have been established in parallel, in order to illustrate my point about postpunk and new wave movements. So you'll find all the groups of this post (with two exceptions ...) on the following, each playlist built in order to highlight one of the many aspects of their discography. It is certainly a typical French disease   to list and catalog everything , but this is not my purpose here. On the contrary. In my opinion, this is to the auditor to complete in a manner of speaking the works  played here, and according to the way he receives the emotions conveyed by these titles, he will qualify them as postpunk, new wave or cold...

Une première approche du Postpunk

Red Lorry Yellow Lorry

Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, le groupe de Chris Reed, pour ouvrir ce premier chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre consacré au Postpunk, mouvement musical qui pourrait, selon moi, se résumer au seul terme de tension. Le titre « Talk about the Weather » en est alors l’un des meilleurs exemples qui soit, la tension à laquelle je fais référence se manifestant aussi bien dans le phrasé de guitare que dans la violence contenue des paroles ou de la manière dont elles sont mises en valeur, voire crachées, par la voix de Reed.

Une autre des caractéristiques du genre, toujours selon moi, tient au son, à la production, et vous allez pouvoir le constater avec le morceau qui suivra : « The Sound of music », par Joy Division. C’est certes le mythique Martin Hannett qui est à la production, mais le morceau apparaît sur Still, et donc parmi d’autres qui n’avaient pas été exploités par le groupe avant la mort de Ian Curtis. C’est peut être ce qui explique son aspect brut et, encore une fois, tout en tension.

Voilà donc ce que devrait être le son de la musique...

Amnesia - T1 - Chap.1 (ok!)

Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, the band of Chris Reed, to open this first chapter of Amnesia, a chapter devoted to postpunk musical movement which could, in my opinion, only be summarized in terms of tension. The title "Talk about the Weather" is then one of the best examples that exists, the tension to which I refer manifested both in the phrasing of guitar violence contained in words or how they are developed, or spit, by the voice of Reed.

Another characteristic, of the genre, to me , is due to its sound, its production, and you'll be able to see it with the song that follows: "The Sound of Music ' by Joy Division. This is indeed the legendary Martin Hannett who is the producer, but the song appears on Still, and therefore among others which were not operated by the group before the death of Ian Curtis. That may be what explains its raw and, again, whole tension.

So this is what should be the sound of music...
