A third postpunk show

« Bleed » par Blitz pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre n°18 consacré, comme annoncé la semaine dernière par Gang of Four, au postpunk, mouvement  qui constitue, vous l’aurez remarqué, la véritable ossature de cette émission. Pour en élaborer la playlist, je me suis inspiré des principales compilations consacrées au genre, comme par exemple, « The Original Anthems From The 70's And 80's Post-Punk Scene » compilation de 3cd publiée en 2009 par Music brokers, label argentin et/ ou « Rough Trade Shops », compilation de 2cd parue chez Mute en 2003. 

(Cela m’a conforté dans mes idées par rapport à ce que j’avais pu vous proposer jusqu’alors et m’a permis de découvrir certaines petites perles, ce dont je vais vous faire profiter ce soir.)
Ce mouvement musical, même s’il est apparu vers la fin des années 1970 et en écho à la déferlante punk, et même s’il se voit souvent représenté par des groupes emblématiques tels que Public Image Ltd, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Birthday Party, Gang of Four, Joy Division, ou encore Wire, groupes estamplillés 80’s, connaît encore une certaine résonnance, un certain echo aujourd’hui. 

De fait, ce que ces groupes cherchent à exprimer  n’est lié ni à une époque ni à un lieu en particulier, la posture générale des artistes rattachés à la mouvance post-punk pouvant se résumer dans cette déclaration d’Allen Ravenstine de Pere Ubu en 1978 : « Les Sex Pistols ont chanté 'No Future', mais il y a un futur et nous essayons de le construire ».

"Bleed" by Blitz to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter No. 18 devoted, as announced last week by the Gang of Four,   to the postpunk movement, which is, you may have noticed, the structure or skeleton of this show. To develop the playlist, I drew my inspiration from some major compilations devoted to the genre, such as "The Original Anthems From The 70's And 80's Post-Punk Scene" compilation of 3cd published in 2009 by Music brokers,  a label from Argentina and / or "Rough Trade Shops" a compilation of 2cd  published by Mute in 2003.

(I was confirmed in my ideas about what I could offer you so far and it allowed me to discover some beads as you will see during this show... I hope.)

This musical movement, even if it appeared in the late 1970s like a kind of echo wave to punk music, and even if it is often represented by iconic groups such as Public Image Ltd., Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Birthday Party, Gang of Four, Joy Division, Wire or groups, labelled 80's, is still having a certain resonance, a certain echo today.

In fact, what these groups are trying to express is not bound to time or to a specific location, the general posture of the artists associated with the post-punk movement can be summed up in this sentence by Allen Ravenstine (of the band "Pere Ubu") who said in 1978: "the Sex Pistols sang 'No future', but there is a future and we are trying to build it."

"Electra Descending" by Christian Death to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter No. 17 devoted, as announced last week by Pink Industry to * my birthday party ..... uh .... no! not to the band of Nick Cave, but to your servant, as the show  is boradcasted at the occasion of my birthday!

A playlist very heterogeneous, therefore, and very little blablah tonight, but many of my favorite songs, songs that I have not had the opportunity to offer you until now because they didn't fit the themes. However, each title listened to will be also the occasion to give you some informations about groups or artists.

A first Valentine's Day show (about Love and Woman... this year)

Eve white / Eve black  (face B de happy House) par Siouxsie and the Banshees, pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre n°16 consacré, comme annoncé la semaine dernière par le « Valentine », des Sisters of Mercy, et calendrier oblige, à la fête des amoureux….

La Saint-Valentin fut instituée par l’Eglise catholique pour contrer une fête païenne (Lupercalia) qui avait lieu à l'occasion du Jour de la fertilité, et qui était dédiée à Lupercus, dieu des troupeaux et des bergers, et à Junon, protectrice des femmes. En effet, cette fête était l'occasion de célébrer des rites de fécondité, dont le plus marquant était la course des Luperques, au cours de laquelle des hommes à moitié nus poursuivaient les femmes et les frappaient avec des lanières de peau de bouc. C’était le bon temps….Les coups de lanière reçus devaient assurer aux femmes d'être fécondes et d'avoir une grossesse heureuse. On dit aussi qu'à cette occasion, une sorte de loterie de l'amour était organisée qui consistait à tirer au hasard le nom des filles et des garçons inscrits de façon à former des couples pour le reste de l'année. Le jour de la Saint-Valentin n’aurait donc pas été associé à l’amour romantique avant le haut Moyen Âge mais avec l'amour physique.

Une playlist dès lors quelque peu hétéroclite, mais avec comme fil conducteur le soucis de rendre hommage à la Femme et/ ou à l’Amour (à chaque fois avec des majuscules…). Nous entendrons donc ce soir des morceaux interprétés par des artistes féminines donc, ou au titre renvoyant soit à une femme, soit à l’un des multiples aspects de leur personnalité…. Je sens que je ne vais pas me faire que des ami(e)s ce soir….                
Un morceau de Siouxsie (égérie, s’il en est du mouvement postpunk) pour débuter. Un titre évoquant la première femme, l’idée de dualité, de dépossession de soi et de douleur. « Ça fait mal / Il y a une douleur dans ma tête / Je souhaite qu'elle s’arrête / Mais il ne s'arrête jamais (…) / Laissez-moi sortir d'ici ... Je fais partie de là-bas / Ne dites jamais mourir ... Je ne dois jamais mourir / Permettez-moi de sortir d'ici ... / Je fais partie de là-bas…

"Eve White / Eve Black" (B-side of "Happy House") by Siouxsie and the Banshees, to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter No. 16 devoted, as announced last week with  "Valentine", by the Sisters of Mercy, and because of the calendar, to the feast of Love ...

Valentine's Day was established by the Catholic Church to counter a pagan festival (Lupercalia), which was held at the occasion of the Day of fertility, and was dedicated to Lupercus, god of flocks and shepherds, and Juno, protector of women. Indeed, this festival was a celebration of fertility rites, the most striking was the race Luperci, during which half-naked men chased women and hit them with strips of goatskin. It was a good time .... The shots received were said to get women fertile and have a happy pregnancy. It is also said that at this occasion a lottery of love was organized: then, people randomize the names of girls and boys to form pairs for the rest of the year. The day of Valentine would not have been associated with romantic love before the Middle Ages but with physical love then...                                                            

A playlist therefore heterogeneous, but as a thread devoted to Woman and / or Love (the both  with capital letter ...). So, we will hear tonight songs sung by female artists then, or referring to a woman, or of one of the many aspects of their personality ... The greatest care will be taken with words tonight in order to keep my she friends and listeners... 

So, a song by Siouxsie (muse of postpunk movement) to start. A title evoking the first woman, the idea of ​​duality, of self-dispossession and pain. "It hurts / There's a pain in my head / I wish it would stop / But it never stops / I can feel it coming...I'm getting weaker / Please help me...I'm getting weaker / I'm getting weaker  / Please help me / I wish I could help myself... / Let me out of here...I belong out there"

Between Postpunk and New wave (i thought...)

Quelqu’un pourrait-il me rappeler en quelle année nous sommes ? 1979 ? The Cure, The Fall, PIL, Wire, Killing Joke, The Stranglers, et Echo and the Bunnymen,  viennent ou s’apprêtent à sortir un album… Peter Hook tourne sous le nom de Joy Division, les Buzzcoks sont toujours maintenus en vie….

« India » par The Psychedelic Furs pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre n°15, consacré, comme annoncé la semaine dernière par Scritti Politti à des groupes ayant navigué entre postpunk et new wave, ou annonciateurs de ce dernier genre musical, puisque se situant (entre autres raisons) à l'avant garde de la musique de la fin des années 70.
Ainsi, The Psychedelic Furs a été créé en 1979 dans le sud de Londres, par les frères Butler. Leur nom, déjà (toujours selon Dominique Dupuis - cf "Références"), se voulait sans doute une provocation lancée au visage du punk dominant, car renvoyant (à mon avis cette fois) aux années Glamrock. Mais cette provocation, ou cette manifestation dans le nom même du groupe d’un désir de faire, de construire autre chose, se retrouve dans les moyens dont celui-ci s’est doté pour y parvenir, c'est à dire dans les incantations dépressives et vénéneuses du chant et dans un son lourd et toujours obsédant. Leur premier album, éponyme, et co-produit par Martin Hannett est une vraie merveille du  genre : ainsi, la basse qui avait lors de la décennie précédente été noyée sous les déluges électriques et psyché des guitares s’impose de nouveau comme un point d’appui rythmique dans des chansons parfois très élaborées. En même temps, la voix réinjecte une tradition mélodique et un chant plaintif qui s’opposent aux éructations primitives (lesquelles avaient cependant parfois leur charme…) . L’introduction du morceau, assez longue et  toute en douceur, doit s’inscrire dans la même démarche de rupture.

Même chose avec The Stranglers pour qui « La musique (à en croire leur premier guitariste, Hugh Cornwell) n’est pas une carrière, mais une émotion » ou pour Simple Minds, avant qu’ils ne se disputent le titre de plus grand groupe du monde avec U2. 

La playlist de cette émission a d'ailleurs été élaborée comme une tentative de partager cette émotion. A vous de juger...

"India" by The Psychedelic Furs to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter No. 15, devoted, as announced last week by Scritti Politti to groups having sailed between postpunk and new wave, or harbingers of that genre, being (among other reasons) at the forefront of the music of the late 70s.

Thus, The Psychedelic Furs was established in 1979 in South London, by the Butler brothers. Their name (again according to Dominique Dupuis - see "References"), was intended as a provocation probably hurled at the punk dominating through referring (in my opinion this time) to Glamrock years. But this provocation, or the fact that the choice of the name of the band can be read like a desire to do so, to build something else, can be found in the means it has adopted to achieve:  depressive and poisonous incantations of singing and a heavy and always haunting sound. Their first album, eponymous, and co-produced by Martin Hannett is a gem of its kind: so, the bass, which during the previous decade was drowned under the deluge of electric guitars and psyche, is needed again as a point supporting rhythm in sometimes very elaborate songs. At the same time, the voice injects a tradition and a plaintive melody that oppose to belching primitive (which, however, sometimes had their charm ...). The introduction of the piece, rather long and very smooth, must be part of the same approach of fracture.

The same with The Stranglers, for whom "music (to believe their first guitarist, Hugh Cornwell) is not a career, but an emotion" and Simple Minds, before they compete for the title of largest group in the world with U2.

Playlist of this issue has also been developed as an attempt to share this emotion. You decide...

A second postpunk show

(The Gang of Four)

« Public Image » par P.I.L. pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre n°14, consacré au postpunk, et plus précisément à d’autres particularités de ce genre qu’à cette expression d’une rage contenue qui, selon moi, le caractérise en premier lieu. Dans cette optique, « First issue », le premier album de P.I.L. (paru en 78), nous servira de fil conducteur.

Pour établir la playlist de cette émission, je me suis par ailleurs inspiré de l’ouvrage « New wave vinyls », de Dominique Dupuis (ancien manager des Stinky Toys), ouvrage proposant à travers la reproduction de 600 pochettes de disques parus sur une dizaine d’années, une histoire subjective –le terme est heureux- du rock des années 80.

«Je hais le rock’n’roll. On devrait enterrer le rock’n’roll. Le rock’n’roll a existé il y a vingt ans, c’est une musique de grand-père » (Lydon à l’occasion de la parution de Metal Box, second album du groupe).

En quittant les Sex Pistols en 78 et après un voyage de trois semaines en Jamaïque avec le patron de Virgin records, John Lydon créa PIL et ce fut quelque chose de complètement différent. Composé à l’origine de Lydon au chant, de Jah Woddle à la basse, de Keith Levene à la guitare et de Jim Walker à la batterie, le groupe composait collectivement sur la base d’improvisations et avec comme leitmotiv l’idée que « nous savons parfaitement comment ne pas le faire ». De fait, P.I.L. sera un groupe d’anti-rock mélangeant l’agressivité punk avec l’aspect cotonneux ou plus en nuance du dub.

L’heure était alors à l’expérimentation sonore, ainsi que vous le laissera entendre la playlist de l'émission....

"Public Image" by P.I.L. to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter number 14, dedicated to postpunk, and more specifically to other features than to this expression of rage or tension that characterizes the genre in the first place, according to me.  Therefore, "First issue", the first album from PIL, (published in 78), will serve as a guideline.

To build the playlist of this show, I was also inspired by the book "New Wave vinyls," by Dominique Dupuis (ex manager of the French band The Stinky Toys), who proposes, through the reproduction of 600 album covers appeared in a dozen years, a subjective history -the term "sujective" is a very appropriate word...- of the music of the 80's.

"I hate rock'n'roll. We should bury rock'n'roll. Rock'n'roll existed twenty years ago, this is music of grandfathers." (Lydon on the day of the release of Metal Box, the second album by PIL).

Leaving the Sex Pistols in 78 and after a three week trip to Jamaica with the boss of Virgin records, John Lydon created PIL and it was something completely different. Originally made of Lydon on vocals, Jah Woddle on bass, Keith Levene on the guitar and Jim Walker on drums, the group composed collectively, basing its work on improvisations, with the idea that (as a leitmotiv) "we know exactly how not to do." In fact, P.I.L. will be an anti-rock group mixing punk aggressivity and subtle dub.

It was indeed the age of sound experimentation, as the playlist of the show will let you know...

A (private) first Xmas show (but) with (as usual) great music.

« Il est né le divin enfant » (par Siouxsie and the Banshees) pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre n°13 consacré, vous l’aurez deviné, à Noël. Ce premier morceau a été enregistré le 15 décembre 82 à la télévision française ( et à l’époque où Robert Smith assurait l’intérim à la guitare au sein des Banshees après le départ de John Mc Geogh) pour la cultissime émission "Les enfants du rock", et il figure aujourd'hui dans le très beau coffret de raretés "Down Side Up". La vidéo se trouve sur you tube, et il est amusant de constater que chacun des protagonistes, que ce soit Siouxsie, Robert Smith, Steve Severin ou Budgie, y a l’allure d’un petit enfant à propos duquel on pourrait penser qu’il a peur de se faire punir et donc se voir priver de ses jouets de Noël...
Quant à moi, je profiterai de l’occasion pour remercier certains auditeurs parmi les plus fidèles ou d’autres, sans doute en devenir, mais sans lesquels Amnesia ne serait pas l' émission qu’elle est aujourd’hui. La playlist pourra également donner quelques idées de cadeaux, hehehe...

"Il est né le divin enfant" by Siouxsie and the Banshees to open this new chapter of Amnesia, Chapter number 13 devoted on, you guessed it, Christmas. This first song was recorded on December  the 15th in 1982 on the French television (and in the days when Robert Smith stood in for the guitar in the Banshees after the departure of John Mc Geogh) for the cult TV show "Les enfants du rock". It appears today in the beautiful box set of rareties "Down Side Up ". The video is on you tube, and it is amusing to note that each of the protagonists, either Siouxsie, Robert Smith, Steve Severin or Budgie, has the appearance of a small child about whom you should think he's afraid of being punished and therefore be deprived of his Christmas toys ...
As for me, I take this opportunity to thank some of the most loyal listeners or other,the soon to be, but without which Amnesia would not be the same (amazing) show as today. Playlist can also give some gift ideas, hehehehe

About some original bands, with a very personal sound...

"The last Song", par Trisomie 21 pour ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre d’Amnesia, chapitre n°12 consacré, comme annoncé sur le dernier post par Martin Dupont à des groupes de musique  à dominante plutôt électronique ayant su développer un son à ce point particulier qu’il les rendait inclassables… D’où leur intérêt.

Il en est ainsi, pour moi, de T.21, groupe (ou plutôt duo) français créé dans le Nord (près de Valenciennes en fait) en 1980 par les frères Lomprez. Leur profil, sur « Discogs » (site web proposant une impressionnante base de données d’enregistrements musicaux), situe leur musique à cheval entre gothique, industrielle, electro-pop ou ambiante… voire la qualifie curieusement, ou comme un aveu d’embarras, comme typique des 80’s. Certes…

Comme beaucoup de groupes de l'écurie PIAS du début des années 80, T.21 fait partie des pionniers légendaires du mouvement electro-cold aux côtés d'artistes tels que Front 242, Neon Judgement ou Tuxedomoon (autres groupes ayant su développer un son très particulier, au point, par exemple pour Front 242 de créer un genre). Au fil de son impressionnante discographie, le duo français parviendra à forger son propre style musical caractérisé certes par la voix unique du chanteur mais aussi par un son que je qualifierais (pour le coup sans trop de risque de me tromper, de froid et sombre), la basse y jouant un rôle de premier plan (d’où l’affiliation, sans doute au mouvement coldwave…). L’album, Black label, marquera en 2009 un retour qui révélera un groupe d'une grande maturité et à la recherche mélodique toujours aussi pointilleuse et encore plus raffinée. La magie, cependant est resté intact, certes grâce aux mélodies toujours aussi entraînantes,mais également à ce son à nul autre pareil. 

Cette recherche d'un son personnel et original sera le point commun des groupes présents sur la playlist de ce chapitre.

 "The Last Song" by Trisomy 21 to open this new chapter of Amnesia, chapter number 12 devoted, as announced on the last post by Martin Dupont, to bands with predominantly electronic music, who have been able to develop such a particular sound  that it made ​​them unclassifiable ... Hence their interest.
This is the case, according to me, of T.21, a French band (or rather duo) created in the north (near Valenciennes in fact) in 1980 by brothers Lomprez. Their profile, on "Discogs" (website offering an impressive database of recorded music), is halfway between gothic, industrial, electro-pop ... or curiously called as "typical of the 80's" (as an avowal of embarrassment).
Like many bands of the PIAS label in the  early 80's, T.21 is part of the legendary pioneers of electro-cold movement alongside artists such as Front 242, The Neon Judgement or Tuxedomoon (other bands who have succeeded in developing a very particular sound, some of them even creating a movement, like Front 242). Throughout his impressive discography, the French duo managed to forge his own musical style characterized by the unique voice of  the singer but also by a sound I would describe (for once without too much risk of being wrong...) like cold and dark, the bass playing a leading role (hence the affiliation, certainly, to the coldwave movement ...). The "Black label" album, marked their return in 2009 and revealed a group of great maturity and with melodic research still fussy and more refined. The magic, however, remained intact,  thanks to still catchy melodies , but also to to this unique sound. 

This search for an original and  staff sound will be the common point of the bands present on the playlist of this show.
